It All Started with a Clinic
In 1911, a group of concerned women in the city opened a clinic to serve Brooklyn’s poor and underprivileged residents. This initiative laid the foundation for what would later become Maimonides Medical Center. Over the past century, Maimonides has grown into one of New York’s premier medical institutions. Local doctors have made significant advances in medicine, and today, in its second century of operation, the hospital continues to provide exceptional clinical care to an increasingly diverse patient population.
Interestingly, the name Maimonides comes from Rabbi Moses Ben Maimon, a brilliant 12th-century philosopher who established the foundation for modern medical training. Better known as Maimonides, he was deeply committed to cultural tolerance, compassionate care, and high medical standards.
Maimonides’ Philosophy
The hospital embodies the vision and principles of its namesake, Rabbi Maimonides. Originally established as New Utrecht Dispensary, the hospital expanded in 1919 by merging several smaller borough clinics under one system. New Utrecht Dispensary then became known as Brooklyn Israel Hospital.
By 1920, Brooklyn Israel Hospital merged with Zion Hospital, forming the United Israel Zion Hospital. As patient numbers increased, new buildings were constructed, including the current administrative headquarters on Tenth Avenue.
In 1947, United Israel Zion Hospital and Beth Moses Hospital merged, creating the medical center known today as Maimonides. The hospital was officially renamed in honor of Rabbi Maimonides.
Today, Maimonides Medical Center offers 24 accredited residency and fellowship programs, training nearly 500 physicians annually. Over the past century, the institution has evolved from a small outpatient clinic serving the poor and underserved into a successful, modern, and globally recognized medical center.
